An online questionnaire was conducted with 223 participants enrolled in dental / oral care courses in Australian Universities. The questions included:
- Why they did or did not purchase loupes
- Benefits and limitations of loupes
- If they would recommend using loupes to other students
Of the sample, 45.7% wore loupes while the remaining 54.3% did not. Both groups named price as a big deciding factor between buying and not buying loupes.
Of the group that wore loupes, 87.9% claimed that their posture was improved and 63% felt their patient care quality was increased with the addition of loupes. Additionally, 94% noticed improved quality in their work while using loupes.
Interestingly, various limitations were listed off within the questionnaires (eg. adjustment period) yet an overwhelming 96% of loupe-users still recommend loupes to their peers. This indicates that current loupe users believe that the overall benefits gained from using loupes outweigh the limitations they experienced.

Dental Hygienists
A study was conducted in which 35 novice dental hygiene students separated randomly into 2 groups.
These groups performed dental hygiene care both with and without the use of loupes. However, one group did the first trial with loupes and the second without loupes, while the other group performed their care vice versa.
The results were that the group that started with the loupes had better posture throughout their 2 care sessions compared to the group that started without them. The conclusions pulled from this study are that loupes significantly improves posture and that the earlier the loupes are integrated into practice, the better effect they have.
Endodontists and Prosthodontists
A study was conducted on 3rd year dental students to evaluate the impact of magnification-use during simulated endodontics and fixed prosthodontics assessments. The endodontics group consisted of 93 students while the prosthodontic group consisted of 86 students. Students were tested through a marked examination, and the results are as followed:
There were statistically significant differences between the pass rates of the group who used loupes verses the group that did not. Pass rates were higher among the students using loupes in both the endodontics group (92.3% vs 75.9%) and prosthodontic group (78% vs 47.2%).
It is noted that many dental schools around the world encourage the use of magnification during training among their students.
